English - frequently asked questions
Can I go abroad with my partner?
Unfortunately not.
I do not have any babysitting experience, can I still go?
I´m afraid not until you have experience. You need to provide at LEAST one (preferably two) babysitting reference from someone NOT related to you. If you don´t have any experience, but really love children then speak to neighbours and friends and find a child to babysit!
And if you want to go to the USA - you need 200 hours of experience.
Usually 6 months to 1 year (most families prefer someone who can stay 9 months to 1 year) In the summer youcan au pair for 3 months. Summer placements are NOT available in the USA.
Simply because it´s safer. When you work with an agency, you have provide various documents and references, which the families looking for an au pair. also have to do. Everything is laid out in black and white before you go. There are no nasty surprises, which can happen if you do everything yourself. Also, once you are abroad you have full agency support which is very important.
Can you guarantee that I will find a family?
No, I can´t - but I can tell you that I have a 99% placement rate. It normally takes 1 to 3 months to find a family. Sometimes it takes much longer; for example - if you´re male, inflexible about where you go, have poor English, etc, etc. I will always do my BEST to place you as quickly as possible, but sometimes there are complications.
You pay a 65€ / 135€ (USA) non-refundable registration fee which INCLUDES a high qualify online English course. So, in the worst case scenario - if you are not placed, you are only 65€ / 135€ out of pocket. The placement fee is ONLY paid when you receive confirmation of your family.
What are the duties and responsibilities of an au pair?
You will help with light housework duties like; vacuuming, dusting, washing the dishes, packing and unpacking the dishwasher, cleaning the kitchen and taking out the garbage, sweeping and mopping floor, preparing simple meals for the children, doing the children's laundry and ironing, cleaning and tidying children's bedrooms, bathroom and playroom, lightshopping and caring for pets.
How many hours a week will I work?
Between 25 (au pair) and 45 hours (mother's help) per week plus 2 or 3 nights babysitting.
Can I study English while I am there?
Yes of course, you will be given the time and opportunity to attend classes. Please note that you will have to pay for the classes yourself, although, in some cases, the family helps towards the expense. You will be given details of schools and courses in your area and assistance organising your studies.
You will receive full board and lodging, plus weekly 'pocket money'. Your pay depends on the country you choose but ranges from about 65€ to 120€ per week.
Yes, of course. You will have 1,5 to 2 free days a week.
Of course but you will probably share a bathroom with the children.
It's not compulsary, not all families need Au Pairs that drive, but it might help your chances of getting a better job if you have one. if you want to go to the USA you will need to have one.
Will I receive medical treatment if necessary?
Yes, Au pairs from the European Union can receive medical treatment. before you go you will apply for your TSE (Targeta Sanitaria Europa) which entitles you to treatment in Europe. In the USA, the family will cover the costs of your medical insurance.
What happens f I have a problem when I am there?
No matter what country you go to, the partner agency I work with to place you in that country will take good care of you. If you have any doubts or concerns they are there to help. You will receive all their information before you go.
Of course, please use the contact form.
